Captchas and Spammers

I had my first Spammer arrive here and leave a marketing comment last night (via an IP address in Vietnam no less). I had already suspected (from looking at my host log files) that my system was being surveyed by the spammers. I don't know why - I only really keep this blog going for agencies and potential employers to look at - and since the agencies rarely pass my details onto employers this blog isn't read by many people anyway. So anyway, that particular spammer went to some trouble to place some advertising that was only seen by me. Plus, it's now been deleted (it really is very easy for me to update the database in this way). However I have now updated the website code so that http links cannot be placed in the comment. I could have gone another way and added a captcha security question. For the moment I have decided not to go along this route. Apart from anything else, it is not completely foolproof. You can read a good article on breaking Captcha security at this link - puremango Even so, if the spamming attacks build up in intensity, I will have to go down this route. I do wonder if the spammers get anything out of these attacks. I can't believe anyone ever clicks on their links and buys anything. Or am I being naiive?
